CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Fire In The Garage

Fire In The Garage
I was visiting my Aunt the other day and she told me the story of how my dad, now deceased, had gotten all of his burns. This seems very fitting now since it is almost July 4th. I remember him telling me that it happened in a garage and had something to due with a barrel but that was about it. My Aunt went on to tell me that it happened when he was 5 years old. It was around July 4th and the children were allowed only small firecrackers. So my fathers siblings, all 6th of them including him, took the firecrackers and were placing them under paint cans etc. to get a bigger noise. So thinking that a paint can would be that much louder how about that old empty barrel in their garage? The barrel apparently was an old gasoline barrel and when lit it caused an explosion and large fire in the garage. So his mother, brothers, and sisters rushed over and saw his feet poking out from the flames. His mother had to go into the fire to pull him out. He suffered many bad burns and remained in the hospital for 33 days with my Aunt Francis and his mother by his side. I of course only new of this incident by the scars still very present on his chest and arm while I was growing up. Oddly enough when I was about 12, I would say, my next door neighbore Jason and I decided we would burn things in the garage, with the door closed no less. So a little while into this the garage door starts opening up, uh oh... My parents are here! So I ran into the house to get a glass of water to put out the fire. Needless to say any attempt I made to cover up my recent activities fell short of success. My dad walks in and turns to Jason saying "I think you better go home now." And Jason bolted out of their so fast, so much for sticking it out with your friends :). Needless to say I had to go in the house were it was explained why what I did was so bad and of course followed by my second of only three paddlings that I can rememeber of my childhood.
